Skills to Succeed
There is an urgent need for the UK to equip itself for the global skills race and ensure that employers and individuals have the skills they need to succeed. The Government intends to work with employers to build a new employment and skills partnership for the future. Employers will have the opportunity to shape recruitment and skills services in return for filling more of their vacancies with people who are further from the labour market and stepping up investment in their people. There are still too many people without the skills they need, with 4.5 million people of working age in Britain having no qualifications and the employment rate for this group being below 50% By showing employers that skills are crucial to the future of the UK economy it can hopefully lead to a situation whereby training courses such as PRINCE2 courses are offered by all employers so that the skills of its workforce and the productivity of the business can be enhanced.

What Employers are Looking for
With the prospect of employers shaping the skills agenda in an area there is a significant opportunity to discover what employers are looking for in their employees. This can be linked to the recent Raising Expectations document and the prospect of more powers being given to local authorities with regard to education and skills. With an enhanced knowledge of what skills and competencies employers are looking for, it will be possible for local authorities and their partners to shape and tailor the local education and skills offer to suit the particular needs of their area. This will lead to a skilled workforce that is ready to enter the workplace immediately equipped to carry out their roles. Again this means that local authorities can work with businesses to show them the importance of training courses. It is certainly the case that things such as PRINCE2 courses can help people to be more confident in their roles.
Skills Pledge
The Skills Pledge can be considered an important initiative by Government and so, it will be important to engage with as many employers as possible who will take part in the pledge. As noted above, there are a large number of people who have no qualifications which places them at significant risk of finding themselves excluded from the workplace in the future. By seeking to equip those people who are working with a Level 2 qualification, places can significantly improve their skills base; improving productivity and ensuring that people have a step on the skills ladder that will allow them to find employment in the future. Initiatives such as the Skills Pledge can also help to focus minds on the importance of uplifting the skills base at all levels. Nationally, there seems to be a particular focus on high levels skills but there is a clear need for places to increase its lower and intermediate skills base before significant gains can be made higher up the skills ladder. On-line training providers can do this by offering training courses such as PRINCE2 courses which provide benefits for both them and their employees.
